I mean, I’ve known you were ‘out there’ for quite some time, but now you’re really out there!! I’m proud of you, Bran. You knew going in that after the candle was lit, most of the ride would be boring.

As for me, I’m doing O.K… Check that, No, I’m Not. You can’t know how badly I wish I could be right where you are. Sorry Bran, just feeling a bit jealous. Do me a favor, will you? Tell me what you see right now. Are the stars really brighter? I want to feel like I’m there. Could you do that for me?

Sounds like you and the crew are handling everything just fine. Hope I don’t let it slip to Emma about the strip poker, next time I see her. Don’t think she’d be too happy about that. (LOL)

Just remember, that same mouse click can find me too, if you need to talk about anything. Thanks for the birthday wish. This isn’t how I pictured fifty, though. Gotta go, Bran. If you see Claire, tell her I miss her.

Ty

< ≡ ♂ ≡ >

(Note from Dr. Willis to Commander Lewis [he gets a report on almost every message Ty sends, as a matter of course], Commander Cody is still not dealing well with the death of his wife, recovery is slow, almost non-existent. That’s what I love about you. You’re always looking after me, even while you’re far away. I went to the gym on Saturday and will go again after work. It does feel good when I go, and the stress melts away. Plus, I feel like I’m doing something good for myself.

Today it’s back to reality. Monday has rolled around, way too soon. I could have used a few more hours of sleep after arriving home so late. I’m at work and thought I’d take a break to send you a note. Sometimes it seems like the week has more than one Monday. I’ve heard about that new Martian calendar of Brandon’s. Put a bug in his ear, will ya? Maybe he can tweak the Earth calendar, too, and we can have several Saturdays, one right after another. Just a thought.

There’s so much going on at work right now. End of year budget reports are due soon, department budget hearings coming up, expenditures still coming in, income not all received, same old, same old. I’ll sure be glad when everything is closed out for the year. Oh well, that’s why they pay me the big bucks. Ha, ha. Which reminds me, I heard a funny line the other day from my boss: ‘I used to get paid weekly, but now I get paid very weakly.’ Ain’t that a hoot?

Right now I’m working on completing the class schedules for spring semester and beginning those for next summer. They seem to come earlier every year. We work about a year in advance of what is going to be happening during the next.

Oh, guess what, we filled the secretarial position. Yea! She starts next week. That will take a bit of the load off me. Then, I promise to take it a bit easier and not worry so much. You know I really do like my job and keeping busy. (The keeping busy serves a dual purpose; it also takes my mind off how much I miss you.)

But, it’s not just the work. The people here make it a great place to work. Faculty members really care a lot about the students. You’ve heard me say how great the staff is, how we help each other problem-solve and sometimes become like family by sharing stories about our kids and lives. Spending that much time together, we see them more than our own relatives and they really do seem like family. You know my boss and that he’s a great guy. We work together really well and complement each other in our strengths. We’ve become good friends and he ‘has my back’ when I need the support at work.

And, he likes the ethical way I perform my job, questioning some of the things that come across my desk and whether they follow the proper standards, policies, and procedures. He runs ideas by me, asks and values my opinion – that’s a rare thing in many office settings. I like the fact that he’s a lot like you, same crazy sense of humor and so caring about others. This is why I sometimes kid him and say that he is my work husband while you’re my home husband. He just laughs and tells his wife what we talk about. We always talk about our families, his kids, what we did on the weekend, and such. Don’t worry your handsome head about it; he will never take your place in my heart (or anywhere else). Ok, that’s enough about work. I would rather talk about you (and us).

You were right about Skype and that we’re now out of range for two-way transmissions. I tried to call last night and it wouldn’t even go through. I really would have liked to have seen your face and looked into your eyes. So, email is now our good friend, in addition to being a lifeline and/or love line (depending on who is talking and the mood of the day). We can attach pictures, though. Send me some of the crew and have them take a few of you to send to me, and be sure to enclose shots or videos of the stars scrolling by, too. Wait. Hmmm, this idea has possibilities. I’ll get back to you on that.

1 4 3 always now and forever, Your bright Penny

< ≡ ♂ ≡ >

Penny works as the Office Coordinator in the Department of Teaching and Learning, within the College of Education, at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. At 40, she has been with the university since she graduated, about sixteen years.

Since most of her work is at a desk, her gym membership really helps her de-stress as well as fight the typical ‘secretarial spread’.
