You know I love you. I have loved you since the 10th grade, when we first met. I’ve never felt that way about anyone else\u2026 ever! But, I don’t know if that’s enough any more.<\/p>\n
Since you’ve been away I’ve had time to think about us\u2026 a lot, and where we are headed in the future: whether it’s together or apart. In the past several years, I know we have been just gliding along, living in a kind of, static existence. No highs or lows, just drifting. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you, but I’m no longer in love with you. And I know it isn’t just me. I’ve felt the way you have been pulling back, emotionally and physically.<\/p>\n
We are still young and have long lives ahead of us. I’m just not seeing that life continuing on the same way for either of us. I think it is time for us both to move on and make some changes in our lives. It’s fortunate that we never had any children to drag through this and hurt.<\/p>\n
I’m starting up a new company and that is going to take up a lot of my time, physically and mentally. I’ve contacted my lawyers and had a divorce agreement drawn up, which I think you will find fair. You can keep the house in Maine and the condo on Majorca. For everything at home that you would call personal possessions, I’ll have your friend Marie and my sister Bethany come in, and box up to store (all the clothes, jewelry, and the like). We’ve only kept photos on the computer, less the ones that are framed. I’ll have Sissy run a copy of the computer albums and have duplicates of the framed pieces made for you, as well. That way, anything you don’t want, you can delete.<\/p>\n
I know that when you get back you won’t be hurting for money, and it isn’t about that. But I’m setting up a trust fund just in your name, with $20 million deposited in it. I want to be fair with you, so let me know your thoughts on that. Please don’t argue. It will help to take away some of my guilt for making this decision while you are not here. With starting up a new company, the rest of our assets won’t be very liquid for quite a while, but later adjustments will be possible.<\/p>\n
There is also a provision in the agreement relinquishing any claim by me to your death benefits, if anything were to happen while you are on this mission. At your convenience, you will be able to assign those benefits to anyone else of your choosing.<\/p>\n
I’m sorry to have to spring this on you in this way, but under the circumstances, there really isn’t another way to do it. Please check over the attached copy of the divorce agreement. Make notes on it if changes are required and reply to me as soon as is comfortably possible.<\/p>\n
I’m very sorry, and can’t say it enough. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I hope all of your dreams come true.<\/p>\n

As the second in command and in light of your psychological training, I am asking you to assist with a tragedy that has developed. It is with deep regret that I have to pass along sad news that will affect one of the crew. Things like this are never easy to hear and even worse when one is so far away and unable to do anything.<\/p>\n
Tom’s wife, Penny, was found dead this morning. She was in her car, at the bottom of a ravine, about two miles from their mountain cabin in Colorado. It appears she may have been heading into town, possibly for supplies, and experienced a blowout just before a sharp curve in the road. She would have had little time to react and slid through the guardrail. Rest assured, she died on impact and did not suffer.<\/p>\n
The duty to inform Tom thus falls to you, both as a psychologist, a friend, and the one on site capable of assessing his reaction and subsequent mental state. Please keep me advised if any action on our part is required, although there is really very little any of us can do at this point in the mission.<\/p>\n
There are only a couple things that could be done, with none of them a good solution. An abort would involve continuing on to a Mars flyby, swing-around, and free-return trajectory, putting you back at Earth in about twenty-two months. Such action would need to be considered soon, as the primary mid-course adjustment is coming up within the next few days.<\/p>\n
As the Hab was not built for Earth re-entry, we will also need to launch another Dragon capsule for you to dock with and transfer to, for splashdown. The safety of the crew is of the utmost importance. As you well know, such as in the case of Commander Cody, emotional distress can be a devastating and paralyzing event.<\/p>\n
The families of Tom and Penny have both been apprised. Penny’s mother, father, and sister are en route to tend to the funeral preparations. They have all been advised not to say anything to Tom until you have had a chance to speak with him. For everyone’s sakes, please let me know when Tom has been briefed on this matter. Also as a personal favor, please pass along my condolences to Tom.<\/p>\n
